Hike: Sugar Hollow Reservoir

Green Water in Sugar Hollow ReservoirThe kids and I went on a beautiful hike to Sugar Hollow Reservoir.  If you live in the Charlottesville area and haven’t gone here, now’s the time.  The Blue Hole is a semi-famous swimming hole in Sugar Hollow.  The trail to the Blue Hole is on the south side of the parking lot, so park as soon as you see the dirt parking lot, and the trail will start from there.

We actually went a little farther and parked on the other side of the parking area (and could First Stream Crossinghave driven further down the road—there were pull-offs for parking and a small parking area further up).

I have no interest in taking my kids 1/2 mile on a steep uphill to a deep swim hole right now, but Sugar Hollow has a beautiful trail that runs right along the stream that is just our speed.  It’s flat, and there are lots of places to play, and there are LOTS of rocks to collect and throw.  An extra plus: little sister’s head didn’t get hit with those rocks.  Since we parked a little ways back, we stopped at the first stream crossing, but if you want a big hike, keep in mind that this trail does cross the stream a couple times (a big problem certain times of year!)

Great to meet you and the ‘kids’ plus favorite pet. Sugar Hollow Reservoir is beautiful, esp. the stream. Reminds me of growing up near a brook. Always fun to have running water and all of nature’s bounties. jnm

Yes, you can’t go wrong when there’s water to play in, well, unless there’s water to play in and you’re trying to keep kids and dogs dry, then things go downhill fast. :) Thanks for stopping by!
